Bokashi...what is it?

Bokashi is a fermentation process that is done by bacteria instead of decomposition. It originates from Japan. In recent years bokashi composting has become more popular. It has become a convenient way to compost for those with limited space. Perfect for the urban farmer and those in apartments. Bokashi bucket systems can fit right on the counter top or under the kitchen sink. Depending on how much waste you have depends on the size of container that is right for you. A simple 5 gallon bucket with a lid or a larger tote can easily be used for bokashi composting. There are other kits on line with spigots to drain off the liquid produced by the breakdown process.

When done properly there should be no foul smells coming from your system. It tends to have a sweet smell depending on inputs of course.

But you can also make your own bokashi right in the comfort of your own home. Finding a way to dry it after the fermentation process is complete can be challenging..this is something to consider and figure out ahead of time before starting the process.

Some bokashi producers use custom made drying racks made from wood framing and screens. Others use solar drying or sun drying. If sun drying is your only option, make sure to check the weather in advance. There is nothing worse then having your efforts ruined by a pop up storm. We speak on experience with this one coming from Florida and it's almost daily thunderstorms.


The uses of bokashi in the garden are a great way to breakdown nutrients and make them more readily available to the plant. You can use them when making your soil and preparing your garden for the season or as a top dress or even as a soil drench. Some gardeners bury the bokashi scraps right in their garden beds in trenches in between their planted rows.

We like to use it as a top dressing on other amendments that we add to aid in the uptake process in our container garden. As you can see there are several uses for bokashi. It has also been used to maintain septic systems...clogs etc. Also in animal bedding to maintain odors. Once you view the soil system as a stomach/ digestive system for the plant it is easy to understand the phrase...Feed the soil...not the plant.

We use spent beer grains from local brewers when available or red winter wheat. We add kelp..azomite..sea 90..fermented banana flowers and or fermented beets and or molasses plus EM1.

Once you understand the process you can experiment with different ingredients to make your own blend of bokashi. If your into gardening yet don't have the space or time turning huge piles of compost...we highly recommend looking into bokashi composting. If you don't have a garden, bokashi composting can still help by reducing waste at your local landfill. Every little bit helps the environment.
